First: register with the Embassy

  • Since the Consular Code (15 June 2014), administrative help is only given to Belgians registered in the consular population register. Unregistered Belgians can only obtain an emergency travel document or a certificate of non-impediment to marriage.
  • You must hold Belgian nationality, live in Vietnam and not be registered elsewhere (deregister from your Belgian municipality first — form model 8).
  • Registration can be done online via e-Consul since 25 November 2020 with a valid, activated eID, your PIN and a card reader; no visit needed.

Passport

  • Apply at the Embassy where you are registered, at any other Belgian embassy or consulate, or at a municipality in Belgium. Applications made elsewhere are forwarded to your registration post and may take longer.
  • The Embassy only receives visitors with an appointment (by phone or email). Bring your identity card and previous passport.
  • Biometrics: colour photo, two fingerprints from age 12, signature from age 6. Abroad, appearing in person is mandatory from age 6.
  • Validity: 7 years for adults, 5 years for minors. Delivery at a consular post takes about 2 weeks from receipt at the production centre.
  • A free biometric pre-registration lets you apply within one year without visiting again; you can also ask to keep your biometrics for 7 years for a duplicate if the passport is lost.
